NAIDOC Day 2022

Is there anything more fun than sitting with young people and reading a great book? Add a sunny spring morning with community fun and you have the basis for a most delightful experience. Big Sky Stories joined in the NAIDOC 2022 fun day celebrations in Broken Hill, on October 6th at Sturt Park.

Surrounded by piles of books written by First Nations authors, Jane had the privilege of reading with anyone who happened to stop and sit on the beanbags and cushions in the shade. Those waiting in line for a delicious Bell’s ice cream cone created a captive audience. Children wandered in, took turns to choose books, joined in the stories making all the animal noises, repeating phrases and enjoying the surprise endings.

Even though we were surrounded by a jumping castle, merry-go-round, fun games and delicious food, many children were still keen to stop, sit a while and share in stories.

This year the NAIDOC theme. ‘Get up! Stand Up! Show up!’ challenges us to keep working every day to narrow the gap for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Big Sky Stories was grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the sharing of truthful stories and encourage a new generation of storytellers.
